The Horse Shows in the Sun (HITS) Ocala Winter Circuit is a highly respected series of horse-jumping competitions held over a seven-week period at HITS Post Time Farm on U.S. Highway 27. Approximately 3,500 horses and 7,000 horsemen from around the world attend each year.

Orlando Dressage wants to recognize and reward the accomplishments of the Amateurs who are the backbone of the USDF. This Championship is a series of 7 shows. To qualify for the series awards, a rider only needs to ride in 4 of the shows in the series. The shows are located in Orlando and the Florida Horse Park in Ocala.

HITS Ocala Winter Horse Show Circuit

  Eight-week hunter/jumper horse show circuit produced by HITS, Inc. that runs from January through March annually. Since its introduction in 1982, the HITS Winter Circuit in Florida has been a fixture on the East Coast show-jumping circuit. Each winter, the Circuit attracts national and international participants from the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Located in Marion County, the heart of Florida's horse country, the area is home to over 600 horse farms and hundreds of supporting facilities and businesses. Classes offered range from the Grand Prix show jumping classes to a selection of divisions for both the novice and experienced rider. The Circuit features 14 Grand Prix events worth a total of $575,000 in prize money, which includes the $100,000 DeLuca Toyota Tundra Grand Prix, presented by Great American to close out the circuit during the HITS Ocala Winter Celebration.

  Shepherds Pie band featuring guitarist David Sanders, keyboardist/bassist Steve Reel and drummer Bobby Dibble just came out of the oven recently and is already turning up the heat in Florida’s music scene. This group is made of top entertainers with over 100 years of combined professional experience.

Performing with Shepherds Pie is Dunning Shaw, “The Man of a Thousand Voices”. His vocal range and versatility have earned him that name. His CD entitled “Schizophrenia” showcases Shaw singing both parts to the hit song, “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”. Dunning Shaw knows how to entertain an audience having shared the stage with many great artists from country to rock ‘n roll.

The Smothers Brothers

  In the late ‘60s, Tommy & Dick Smothers were television mainstays with a variety show that also turned into several popular record albums. On Friday, March 19, 2010, the brothers will bring their trademark stage performance to the Circle Square Cultural Center featuring their up-beat folk songs which almost always lead to hilarious mid-song arguments between the two. The performance will also feature the popular “Yo-Yo Man” song in which Tommy Smothers incorporates a yo-yo completely into the entire act. Plus, Tommy’s signature line of, “Mom always liked you best!” continues to be used during their show as well as by fighting siblings all over America!

Archaeology of the Seminole Wars

  To celebrate Florida Archaeology Month, join us March 25 for an Evening Program on the Archaeology of the Seminole Wars.

The program will be presented by Dr. Brent Weisman, a well-known authority on the Seminole Wars in Florida and the author of several books on the topic. Dr. Weisman is currently a professor and Chair of the Anthropology Department at The University of South Florida in Tampa.

During the Open House, archaeologists from the Florida Public Archaeology Network and Silver River Museum staff will have tables set up with archaeology information and prehistoric artifacts on display.

The Museum Open House runs from 4-6 pm; the evening program is from 6-7 pm. There is no admission charge; however due to limited seating reservations are needed for the program.

On these lovely spring days, the annual Live Oak International Driving Event will be held in Ocala, Florida, drawing thousands of people to the area, as we again serve the dual purposes of giving the public a chance to enjoy world class combined driving competition while also supporting many non-profit and charity goals, both locally and nationally.

Since it’s inception in 1993, the Live Oak International has become one of the premier Combined Driving Events in North America and is the only North American Event sanctioned as a CAIA by the Federal Equestre International. Since 1995, we have hosted Selection Trials for both the United States and Canadian Equestrian Teams. Competitors have gone on to gain world class recognition and success because of their participation in Live Oak.

Hosted on Charlotte Weber’s beautiful 4,500 acre Live Oak Plantation in Ocala, the Event also contributes to many local charities. A Trade Fair will be open throughout the Competition and special features Sunday include a Coaching Exhibition and a Classic Car Show. Entrance $5 per day per person.

Emergency Vehicles Past & Present Car Show

  The Marion County Sheriff's Office Foundation will hold a car show fundraiser featuring emergency vehicles from the past and present from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at the Marion County Sheriff's Office Operations Center, 692 N.W. 30th Avenue, Ocala. This year will include 50 "best of" trophies, a "cruise" (convoy) through Marion County and a BBQ dinner to follow the show. Highlights of the event are the past and present emergency vehicles, but the event is open to all show vehicles. Pre-registration by March 19 for $15; after March 19, registration is $20. Also, to cruise,the cost is $10 per perosn and you must register by March 19, 2010. The cruise will start at the Sheriff's Office and end at the inmate work farm at the intersection of CR-35 and CR-464, Ocala.

Gloria Austin, renowned horse-woman, will track the history of the coach and talk about how it would have been to travel on land through 6,000 years of history. Pictoral references will be used to describe the variety of coaches still in existence today and how to distinguish one from another. The iconic American stage coach will be described in detail along with information about its builder.

  “The Drifters were the all time greatest Atlantic recording group,” said Ahmet Ertegun, founder of the Atlantic Recording Company and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Charlie Thomas is the only voice on all the Drifters recordings since 1958. He has been in show business for fifty years, first singing gospel and a short stint with the Orioles. He then joined the Five Crowns and in 1958 the Drifters. The Drifters' first release was the 1959 hit "There Goes My Baby" followed by “This Magic Moment”, “Save the Last Dance for Me”, “Some Kind of Wonderful”, “Under the Boardwalk” and other golden hits!

  Boomtown Days of Dunnellon 2010
The Town of Dunnellon is gearing up for their annual 2 ½ day festival which celebrates the discovery of phosphate back in the late 1800s. This year’s festival is April 16th, 17th, & 18th in Dunnellon’s Historic Village.
The event is hosted by the Dunnellon Area Chamber of Commerce.

The weekend kicks off Friday evening, April 16th with a Boom or Bust Party from 6 to 9 p.m. by the stage in the parking area of First Realty on the corner of S. Ohio Street & W. Pennsylvania Ave. Tickets are $12 per person and include an evening of dancing to
the live blues music of Blind Driveway, great food and a couple glasses of wine or cold beer. The Boomtown Mayor will be announced and allowed to share his or her “platform”. Queen of the Rainbow contestants will be introduced and mingle with guests. Impromptu skits are always a good possibility.

Saturday, April 17th and Sunday, April 18th bring a typical small town arts and crafts show complete with good food, day long live entertainment on the stage and a beauty pageant each day. Saturday at 1 pm the Little Mr. and Miss Dunnellon pageant will take place.
Sunday brings the Queen of the Rainbow Pageant beginning at 2 p.m. when the lucky winner wins $500 among other prizes.

19TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 19th Annual Golf Tournament to benefit Ocala Civic Theatre will be held on Friday, April 16, at Candler Hills Golf Club, which is located on S.W. 80th Avenue, one mile north of State Road 200. The format will be best-ball Florida scramble.

There will be hole-in-one prizes for the first hole-in-one on all Par 3 holes. Each player will have the opportunity to win one of over 50 on-course and door prizes. Golfers will be divided into three flights, including at least one senior flight. The first-place team in each flight will win trophies and $100.00 per person in gift certificates. The second-place team in each flight will receive $85.00 per person in gift certificates. The third-place team in each flight will receive $75.00 per person in gift certificates.

The tournament will have a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start. Players may arrive as early as 11:30 a.m. to register and warm up with range balls. The entry fee is $75.00 per person, and includes dinner, on-course soda and water, range balls, greens fees, cart, a goodie bag with golf balls, and more. Make up your own foursome (or we will assist you). Mixed foursomes and ladies foursomes are invited. Sorry, no professionals are allowed to play.   Tickets are now available online for the CFCC Foundation Taste of Ocala fundraiser. E-tickets can be purchased at www.tasteofocala.org. Advance tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for CFCC students with ID, $15 for children 5 to 12 yrs. Children under age 5 are admitted free. All tickets at the gate are $30. Paper tickets will be availabe on March 22.
The 22nd annual scholarship fundraiser will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to sample dishes from the area's finest restaurants as they support a worthy cause.
This year's event is presented by Signature Brands LLC and promises to be fun for the entire family. Activities include a children's tent with cookie decorating and clowns. There will be a silent auction and culinary arts students will demonstrate cake decorating. Diners can sit stage-side and listen to music provided by TKT-FM or socialize with friends under covered dining.

Torch Run for Special Olympics

  Dunnellon Police Department will be participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics on April 28 at 10 am.

Every year, for the past 25 years, the "flame of hope" has traveled across Florida in a relay of simultaneous routes covering thousands of miles. The torch is carried by 3,000 local and state law enforcement officers from 300 agencies through 60 counties all the way to the Opening Ceremonies of Florida's Annual State Summer Games which is being held on May 14th at the Disney All-Stars Resort. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the signature event of the law enforcement community's year-round support of the Special Olympics.

Come out and be a part of this spectacular event as the "flame of hope" travels down Hwy. 41 on its way to the State Summer Games making its first trip through the City of Dunnellon! The run will start at the Dunnellon Wal-Mart and end at City Hall, a distance of approximately 1.4 miles.

All funds for this event are generated through the sale of shirts and hats or donations which support the special athletes when they participate in the summer Olympics. The Dunnellon Police Dept. is currently collecting donations to support the Special Olympics by selling Torch Run T-Shirts and Hats. The Torch Run T-shirts are being sold for $12.00 and the hats for $10.00. Please contact the Dunnellon Police Department at 352-465-8510 for more details.

  The Bill Allred Jazz Band started its quest in late 1989, with the primary mission of finding, researching and playing some of the almost-forgotten arrangements of the early reading jazz bands. At the time they didn't realize what a Pandora's Box they were opening. Charts, interest and fans came from all over. Their efforts to try new sounds and combinations have resulted in some very unusual treatments of old and new musical material suitable for audiences of all ages.
