The Horse Shows in the Sun (HITS) Ocala Winter Circuit is a highly respected series of horse-jumping competitions held over a seven-week period at HITS Post Time Farm on U.S. Highway 27. Approximately 3,500 horses and 7,000 horsemen from around the world attend each year.

Join us February 9th for an Evening Program on free African-Americans in the south during the period between the 1500s and the Civil War. Mr. Charles Eady uses his own family history from St John’s Parish, South Carolina to document the experiences of Free Blacks (and Black Indians) during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Eady’s fascinating research is based on early census records, affidavits, land grants, tax returns, wills and narratives from his own relatives. The Museum Open House runs from 4-6 pm; the evening program is from 6-7 pm. There is no admission charge; however due to limited seating reservations are needed for the program. It’s the musical territory staked out by the husband-and-wife duo of Keifer and Shawna Thompson, an exciting and unpredictable area where country meets rock. Keifer and Shawna have been learning their craft in Nashville for a decade. “To see it paying off right now is elating,” Keifer says. “Every day I try to take a little time, soak it all in and say thanks.”
Fans began truly getting to know their way around Thompson Square with the release of the infectious radio smash “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,” a fitting introduction to the Thompsons’ natural chemistry and spirit of buoyant romance.

MARION COUNTY MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY SPEAKER'S SERIES
February 15th, 2012: Dr. Richard "Rich" Estabrook, Florida Public Archaeology Network
The Marion County Museum of History and Archaeology is pleased to announce its February speaker for the Museum's speaker's series, Dr. Richard Estabrook of the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Dr. Estabrook will be speaking about the use of ground-penetrating radar and its uses in discovering archaeological sites, including historic cemeteries. The Museum will be open from 8:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., when lecture seating will begin, and Dr. Estabrook will begin speaking at 7:00 p.m. Seating for this event is limited and priority will be given to members of the Marion County Museum of History and Archaeology, so please contact the Museum to confirm attendance and seating for the event.
The Museum is open seven days a week. All Museum programs are privately funded. Donations and support for the Museum's operating budget, displays and programs is encouraged. Being a teenager in the Bronx back in the ‘50s and early ‘60s was unlike being a kid anywhere else in the universe. There was a magic in the air that blended right in with the sweet aroma of Mama’s cooking. It was the liberating sound of doo-wop and rock and roll. This music had heart, soul, purity and a sound... oh, the sound...tunes that made you want to dance...lyrics that once in a while, even made you cry.

The 2012 Ninth Annual NATIONAL VET MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP presented by ProSports USA and Motocross of Marion County is a two-day event, with an all-day practice on Saturday, February 18, and the race on Sunday, February 19. This Championship event will be held at Motocross of Marion County in Citra, Florida, and is designed specifically for those riders who have earned the special status as a "VET MX RACER." Most Vet MXer's have been racing for a good part of their life, and many are now introducing the sport of motocross to their offspring. This event will also offer support classes for the offspring of the Vet Racers, and other up-and-coming riders. All riders must have a current AMA membership to both practice and race. If you don't have an AMA membership, you can purchase one at the track for $39. No other memberships are required.

Standing an easy 6’5” tall with a frame more akin to an NFL lineman than an entertainer, his mere presence is enough to garner your attention. And his voice? Maybe bigger. John Rich of the country duo Big & Rich often introduces Otto as “The Biggest Voice in Country Music,”
Otto began a two-year creative journey that also enlisted his brother-in-law Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts as a producer and co-writer. The muscular riff of “Ain’t Gonna Stop” opens the album, carrying a chorus that could be a mantra not just for the rest of the record, but perhaps for the rest of Otto’s career. “Just Got Started Loving You” reveals Otto’s fondness for soul, and its passionate plea carries over to the album closer, “Man That I Am.” For You,”the searing vocals of “Damn Right” and plain-spoken country truth of the title track. From a very early age Lesley showed great interest in music. Even at an age when she did not have any reading skills, she would sift through 45's and pick out her favorite songs just by the color of the label. Because of her constant interest, when Lesley was fifteen her parents sent her off to get professional vocal training. Every now and then Lesley would sing with her cousin's band. One night while performing at The Prince George Hotel, Lesley's talent was discovered by the president of Mercury records, Irving Green. Green rushed Lesley into recording a few demos and sent them around the company for everyone to hear. They all agreed Lesley had something and introduced her to producer Quincy Jones. Jones and Lesley made a great team. With his great production skills and Lesley's voice, success was fate. After a night of the two searching through demo records, Lesley picked out a song. The selected tune was "It's My Party" and after the song's release, it topped the charts. The nation was won over and crowned Lesley "Princess of Rock 'n' Roll”.

If you love Elvis®, then you'll certainly enjoy this event. Elvis tribute artists will come from all over to entertain you with live performances of The King's hits. These tribute artists dedicate themselves to preserving the memory of The King. They look like Elvis, sound like Elvis, dress like Elvis and even dance like Elvis. During this event, the tribute artists will be competing for a spot in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artists Contest™ in Memphis, TN in August 2012 where a prize of $20,000 awaits the grand prize winner.
Come and watch the competition and cheer on your favorite Elvis tribute artist. The preliminary round is at 11 am. The final round is at 7pm.

Don’t miss the second annual Silver River Knap-In at the beautiful Silver River State Park. Expert flint knappers (people who make stone tools such as spear points and knives), archaeologists, potters, hide tanners, bow makers and other specialists in prehistoric skills will gather from across the eastern U.S. to demonstrate their crafts.
This unique event includes archery, tomahawk and atlatl spear throwing demonstrations each day. Presentations exploring the Pre-history of Florida will be offered on both Saturday and Sunday. A flint knapping competition and on-going pre-historic skills demonstrations take place all weekend. Vendors will also offer unique crafts, reproduction stone tools, raw stone, knapping tools and food for sale.
Visitors can also visit the Silver River Museum, hike or bike the trails of the state park, or canoe and kayak on the pristine Silver River. $5.00 Admission per person (kids under six and active U.S. military personnel admitted free). Free state park entry and parking. |

In 1967, a politically charged and musically experimental band was formed in the windy city – a band that over the past four decades has become one of the longest running and most successful rock and roll bands in American music history. That band is CHICAGO –and Beginnings is the premiere tribute to their music – music that has come to define generations.
Great Chicago tribute bands should have an excellent horn section…Beginnings does! The band consists of two guitarists, a drummer, a keyboardist and four in the horn section. The vocals are shared by four different members of the band and all four of them really do a great job.

Gary Ellis will explore this fascinating period by presenting archaeological findings from the following forts: King, Dade, Izzard and Micanopy. Gary Ellis is an active archaeologist and an expert on the Seminole Wars in Florida. Ellis is the Director of the Gulf Archaeological Research Institute and his research has thoroughly documented Fort King in Ocala. Sanctioned by the Florida Bar-B-Que Association (FBA), the contest will include a number of competitive BBQ’ers from around the state of Florida, who will compete for prizes and recognition for their quality barbecue.
Competitive teams won't be the only ones slow cooking and smoking at the event either - local "backyard BBQ-ers" are also invited to participate and show Ocala what good BBQ tastes like too!

Blue Oyster Cult
They sold more than 15 million records. For nearly three decades, Blue Öyster Cult has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs. Blue Öyster Cult occupies a unique place in rock history because it's one of very few hard rock/heavy metal bands to earn both genuine mainstream critical acclaim as well as commercial success. The band is often cited as a major influence by other acts such as Metallica, and BÖC was listed in VH1's countdown of the greatest hard rock bands of all Time. Outlaws
The Outlaws were born to the blue-collar port city of Tampa, Florida in the early 1970’s. Joining the likes of Tom Petty and other regional acts at the time, The Outlaws quickly became a favorite of the Tampa college crowd.
Following in the footsteps of such great bands as The Allman Brothers and The Eagles, The Outlaws developed their own high-powered, guitar-driven country-rock. With substantial success in the live concert arena and on the strength of repeated chart-topping records, The Outlaws established themselves as premiere players in the phenomenon that came to be known as Southern Rock.
Today, the Outlaws are at the threshold of a new era. Along with original singer/songwriter/guitarist Henry Paul and original drummer/songwriter Monte Yoho, the Outlaws feature Chris Anderson, Billy Crain, Randy Threet, and Jon Coleman. |

In the summer of 1962, the The Contours with original member Joe Billingslea recorded Berry Gordy Jr.'s, "Do You Love Me," resulting in the group's (and label's) first hit. Within two weeks of its release, the song roared to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, taking the #1 spot on the R&B charts and #3 on the pop charts, remaining on the charts for five months. The song was the Gordy label's first million-seller, and it still holds the record as Motown's fastest rising hit of all time. In 1963, the group charted another hit, sending "Shake Sherry" to the #21 position on the R&B charts (#43 pop). In 1964, they charted "Can You Do It" at #41 R&B.
The Contours with Joe Billingslea continue to record and tour extensively. Their show is jam-packed with dazzling, high-energy choreography, impeccable harmonies and those timeless Motown grooves that everyone knows and loves. This show is as high energy as it was in the 1960s, though the flips and splits of yesteryear have been replaced by a brilliant choreography more suited to gentlemen in their second half-century of life!

Over the decade of the ‘60s Lou followed success with greater success. “Two Faces Have I” was his next big hit featuring his stratospheric falsetto.
