Curtains

Ocala Civic Theatre
Sep 09, 2010-Oct 03, 2010
  CURTAINS

September 9–October 3, 2010
Curtains is a whodunit musical comedy that takes place in 1959 at the Colonial Theatre in Boston, where Robbin’ Hood — a bad Western adaptation of the original Robin Hood –– is playing. Jessica Cranshaw, a faded film star diva who can’t sing, dance or act plays Madame Marian. As she takes her bow at the finale of the show and moves backstage, she promptly collapses behind the curtain.

The entire company comes under suspicion for her murder and Lt. Frank Cioffi of the Boston Police Department is called in to solve the murder. Also a theatre buff and amateur actor, he becomes more involved with saving the show than solving the case. As secrets are surfacing, the production numbers in Robbin’ Hood are rewritten, all while the body count keeps rising. Without falling to murder himself, can Lt. Cioffi solve the case, save the show, and get the girl before the curtain rises for the next show? This funny and energetic comedy is a splendid musical that will keep audiences guessing and laughing the entire time.

Doubt

Ocala Civic Theatre
Oct 07, 2010-Oct 17, 2010
  DOUBT

October 7– October 17, 2010
Doubt is a gripping story of suspicion cast on a priest’s behavior that is less about scandal than about questions of moral certainty. The play is set in the St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx during the fall of 1964. In this brilliant and powerful drama, Sister Aloysius, the Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students.

Mysterious circumstances lead Sister Aloysius to believe that misconduct has occurred. Father Flynn denies any wrong-doing, insisting that he was disciplining the student for drinking alter wine. Flynn’s next sermon is on the evils of gossip.

This intriguing and timely drama won both the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play in 2005. You will be fascinated as you watch this drama unfold on stage – a provocative investigation revealing the impact and consequences of truth, lies, gossip, and faith.

  LEND ME A TENOR

November 4 –November 28, 2010
Lend Me A Tenor is a fast-paced comedy guaranteed to produce serious laughs from the audience! Set in 1934 in Cleveland, the Lend Me A Tenor plot produces the rip-roaring sequence of circumstances that befall famous tenor, Tito Merelli (known as “Il Stupendo”) on his visit to the city. When his wife finds an adoring autograph-seeking fan in a closet in their hotel room – and mistakes her for a secret lover – she sends a “Dear John” letter to Merelli who erupts in a hysterical outburst. He is given a dose of tranquilizer – or a double dose to be exact – right before he is supposed to go onstage. Believing the show must go on, the General Manager recruits his assistant Max to impersonate Merelli, who is to perform Othello.

The hilarity continues as Merelli regains consciousness and also rushes onstage, triggering a crazy series of fun that ranks among the top farces of all time! Lend Me A Tenor is a play that audiences will want to see more than once. This delightful comedy produces non-stop laughter!

  ROMANCE IN D

November 11 – November 19, 2010
Romance in D is a comic love story set in two side-by-side apartments in present-day Chicago. Charles Norton, a musicologist, lives in one apartment alone with his books and music. Isabel Fox, a poet on the verge of a divorce, moves into the other apartment. Depressed, Fox puts her head in the oven in a half-baked suicide attempt. Charles smells the gas, rushes next door and inadvertently becomes Isabel’s savior.

Soon, Isabel’s father George Fox, arrives to try and cheer her up. Mix in Helen Norton, Charles’ mother, who also arrives to meddle in her son’s life, encouraging him to befriend the attractive next-door neighbor, and you have a lively quartet.

Will Helen and George fall in love and leave the children to fend for themselves? Will Charles profess his love for Isabel and risk another heartbreak? Will Isabel go back to her husband or put her head back in the oven? All four characters use their knack for music and words as they nervously navigate the path of true love.

The Full Monty

Dec 30, 2010-Jan 16, 2011
  THE FULL MONTY

December 30 – Jaqnuary 16, 2011
The Full Monty takes place in Buffalo, New York where the recession has hit and many of the men in the community have been laid off from their jobs at the steel factory. The women of the city, many of whom are financially supporting their husbands at this time, seek some entertainment and they find it onstage at Tony Giordano’s club.

Seeing how much their wives enjoy watching male strippers during their “Girls’ Night Out,” the unemployed steelworkers come up with a bold plan to make some quick cash. In the process they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun. The Full Monty is full of heart. Taking charge of one’s life and following one’s dreams are great lessons for all of us to learn. A Broadway musical hit!

The Marvelous Wonderettes

Ocala Civic Theatre
Feb 03, 2011-Feb 27, 2011
  THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES

February 3 – February 27, 2011
The Marvelous Wonderettes is an irresistible, high-energy musical that takes place on Prom Night in 1958. The hot guy glee club, The Crooning Crabcakes, gets canceled by the Principal when their lead singer gets caught smoking in the locker room and the back-up, all- girl group, The Marvelous Wonderettes, is given the opportunity to perform for the students of Springfield High School.

This musical comedy brings the audience back to the good ‘ole days of proms, pin-ups and poufy hair. Each member of The Marvelous Wonderettes has hopes and dreams that come alive while entertaining audiences with one Top 40 hit after another. By doing so, the girls reveal their individual personality, style, and personal life stories through iconic songs of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s while rocking the house with their comedic sensibilities. Even though audiences won’t get to dance at this prom, they will certainly want to brush off the old blue suede shoes, put on a pretty poodle skirt and laugh wholeheartedly throughout this fun, lively and energetic musical.

  WHEN BULLFROGS SING OPERA

March 17 – April 10, 2011
By Carl L. Williams
When Bullfrogs Sing Opera is a sweet and flowing comedy featuring a social-climbing sister who tries to keep her visiting country sister from embarrassing her among her new society friends. Meet Millicent and Coreen – two girls who grew up in Bullfrog Waller. Millicent is now a big-city snob. Her sister, Coreen, on the other hand, chose to stay in the country…. Until now!

How can Millicent keep her embarrassing past a secret when Coreen is as country as cornbread and grits when she shows up in overalls and spouts her backwoods sentiments to everyone? Frantic, Millicent decides to pass Coreen off as an actress, Rebecca Manderley, who never leaves her latest role in a play. But why would Coreen leave Bullfrog Waller after all these years?

Deceit and conceit ultimately reveal not just secrets, but what matters most in life in this award-winning and sweet comedy. Audiences can’t help but catch Coreen’s positive outlook on life.

The King and I

Ocala Civic Theatre
May 19, 2011-Jun 12, 2011
  THE KING & I

May 19 – June 12, 2011
Music by Richard Rodgers Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Based on “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon Original Choreography by Jerome Robbins The King & I is a richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination that starts in 1862 in the Royal Palace in Bangkok. The King of Siam, in an attempt to bring Western culture to his country, hires Anna Leonowens to tutor his royal princes and princesses. The King is considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, as well as his ways.

When Anna feels it is time to return home, the King falls seriously ill. In the end, can Anna leave Siam when the King and the royal children need her most? Can she find it in her heart to leave a country, a people and, most of all, the pupils she has come to love?

With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story.
