A Natural Setting for Fine Art

An active appreciation of fine arts has been an integral part of the cultural life of Ocala/Marion County for years. “Fine Arts for Ocala,” (FAFO) was founded in 1970, and it promotes visual and performing arts programs for people of all ages. The group’s annual autumn art show, held on the grounds of the McPherson Government Complex, attracts more than 50,000 people during its two days to view and purchase works of art, enjoy entertainment and see an exhibition of the artwork of area school children.

Perhaps the region’s most famous renowned art venue, The Appleton Museum of Art showcases world-class collections of European, American, Asian, African, Islamic, Contemporary and pre-Columbian art and antiquities. The museum also offers a year-round schedule of traveling art exhibitions, educational programs and cultural events.

Description: The Appleton Museum of Art offers world-class collections of European, American, Asian, African, Islamic, Contemporary and pre-Columbian art and artifacts. A year-round schedule of After Hours events, workshops and touring exhibitions are also presented. Services: The Appleton Museum offers traveling exhibitions, docent-guided tours, After Hours musical events, workshops, guest lectures and art-oriented trips. Hours: Open: 10 a.m.-5p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, and closed on Monday. This park has more than 10 distinct natural communities, dozens of springs and miles of trails. Visitors can canoe down the crystal clear river, hike or bike along one of the nature trails, or just sit and watch for the wide variety of birds and wildlife. The picnic area features three pavilions with grills that may be rented for group outings and a playground for the youngsters. For overnight stays, the park has a full facility campground and 10 luxury cabins. There is also a primitive campground for use by organized groups (scouts, church groups, etc.) The park is home to a pioneer cracker village and the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center. The center is operated by the Marion County School District in cooperation with the park and is open to the public on *weekends and holidays* from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00. p.m. Admission to the Museum is $2.00 per person.
